The Wacken Open Air 2020 is dedicated to Mesoamerica and the fascinating advanced civilizations of this region. Especially the Mayan and Aztec cultures will be highlighted and appreciated before and during the festival. An important element for this is our adaptation of the Haabʼ calendar.
The Haabʼ was part of the famous Mayan calendar system. The 365 days of the year are divided into 18 months with 20 days each. In addition there is an additional month with only 5 days. The calendar began with the winter solstice and Mayan inscriptions show that the Maya were aware of the real length of the solar year and the need for leap days. However, whether leap days were really used, is still controversial in research.
Our W:O:A Haabʼ calendar started, of course, on August 5, 2019 with the ticket sale start. Some readers may already have guessed it: In the coming months we will provide you with information, announcements, articles and maybe even bands every 20 days.
By the way: The 19th and only five days long month is described as a time when portals into dark worlds are created and you shouldn't wash your hair. Parallels to a metal festival in Northern Germany are purely coincidental.
The break after the festival is over, the area is cleared and cleaned, the visitor survey is finished. It's about time for a few decorations on the metalheads' equipment: Wallpapers for the Wacken Open Air 2020 are now available for download!
With our last text, we have explored the culture of the Maya, the Aztecs, and the Inca. Today, we’d like to take a closer look and examine the spiritual realm of Central America. Sadly, Satan doesn’t make an appearance. Or does he?
The cultures of Mesoamerica were shaped by the rainforest, the forest is part of their history and identity. The rainforests of this world must be preserved and protected. Here you can assist us with this.
